EXAMINING THE SPECIALISED CELLS AND TISSUES INVOLVED IN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF PARTICULAR ORGANS
This week we will:
- Look at one human organ and study it in detail
- Ask questions and answer questions related to this organ
- Understand that Organisms are made up of Organ systems which is made up of tissues which is made up of cells
- Describe the structure and function of one organ – we are looking at the skin
- Choose a research question to explore related to this organ (computers allowed for this session)
- List of research questions:
RESEARCH IDEAS:
- Research what causes wrinkles and how wrinkle formation can be slowed down or improved, eg, botox
- Research make up and what type is best for your skin
- Research which chemicals you should never put on your skin yet are found in many skin screams
- Research the best method to clean your skin and avoid blackheads
- Research what causes pimples and how you can help your skin avoid them or improve your skin after pimples appear
- Research what causes skin cancer and how to prevent it
- Research COLLAGEN. What is the difference between young and old skin and how old skin can be made to look young again
- Research the cosmetic industries claim that their products can improve your skin and make old skin young again
- Compare the best cosmetic brands for your skin and which ones to avoid and why.
- Research how tattoos work.
- Research tanning options, from oils to fake tans and how these work.
- Research the make up people used in the past to the present and the effect of these on the skin according to historical records.
Formative Assessment: (Evidence of Learning)
- Submit your research (one A4 page)
- Print this page and stick it in your science book
Specialised cells perform specialised functions in multicellular organisms. Groups of specialised cells cooperate to form a tissue, such as a muscle. Different tissues are in turn grouped together to form larger functional units, called organs.
The term “tissue” refers to groups of cells that function together to perform specialised tasks. The link between specialised cells and tissues is that tissues are made of specialised cells that work together.

How Does Sunscreen Work?
... Inorganic chemicals in sunscreen can reflect or scatter the light away from the skin, and organic (carbon-based) ones can absorb UV rays so that our skin doesn't. How it works. Some inorganic chemicals, including minerals such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, act as a physical sunblock.
